Where Do I Start

On turning an archive into something with a first page

The first hundred posts taught me how to write. The second hundred taught me what I was writing about. By the third, readers were asking the same question in the comments: where do I start?

An archive is a bad answer to that. It is sorted by date, which is the one order nobody reads in. The good pieces sit next to the ones that were only good that week.

A book is a better answer. It has a first page. It has an order someone chose. It ends.

Where Do I Start

So I pulled the thirty pieces that still held up and put them in the order I would want a stranger to meet them. Some needed a new first line. Most needed nothing.

What surprised me was how different they felt on a page. The same sentences, set in a real typeface with real margins, read slower. People finished them.

That is the whole idea. You already did the writing. The binding is the easy part.

The second thing I learned is that a contents page is an argument. Put the pieces in a different order and it is a different book.

I moved the piece everyone shares to the middle. It works better once you have read the two before it.
